Ministry through Music

An important part of our worship services is the leadership and inspiration of our Music Ministries.

Our Chancel Choir leads the musical portion of our 10:45 worship service on a regular basis.  They express their commitment by also leading at the 8:30 service on special services through the church year.  They practice on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 PM and membership is open to all who like to sing and have a desire to worship by singing together.

Our Director of Music is Mary Shields.  Mary has served as Director of Music and Organist since 2005.  Prior to that, she served as Church Organist from 2001 to 2005.  Mary brings over 25 years of church music experience and leads the Chancel Choir with great enthusiasm.  She has a wonderfully patient way of bringing out the best in each member of the choir.  She also teaches private piano lessons.

Our accompanist is Michele Jurgensen.  Michele has been a long time member of our congregation.  She brings great creativity to her playing, and her Offertory specials are a highlight of our services.  Michele also teaches music at St. Stephens Episcopal School.

The Wesleyan Handbell Choir brings special variety to our worship experience.  This is a dedicated group that is always ready to welcome newcomers.  They practice on Tuesday afternoons at 3 PM.  Our Church is fortunate to have a complete set of bells and chimes and a diverse library of music.  David and Carolyn Brown serve with much dedication as our Leaders.  They bring a wealth of musical experience and lead, serve, and play with much passion.  We are grateful for them!  The Handbell Choir has a long history here at FUMC Palmetto and periodically play for a variety of community groups as well.
